Lona Rose Small
Bio: In over 30 years in Lab Medicine, Lona Small has worked in almost all lab sections in both hospital and academic settings, and several countries. From Chief medical technologist and supervisor in Histopathology, Supervisor in Core Laboratory and now Quality Assurance Specialist.Small has led many collaborative process improvements and Lean projects at The Johns Hopkins Hospital including Restructuring Phlebotomy for improved turnaround time of STAT and Timed labs, Reducing Phlebotomy delays in Psychiatry units, Improving RN- Phlebotomy communication to reduce near- misses, reducing hemolyzed LDH in oncology research patients, participating in RN in services to reduce Pre-analytical errors and many more.Small is currently working on demonstrating ROI to hospital leadership for laboratory impact on patient outcomes such as reducing Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection (CLABSI), reducing phlebotomy delays and sepsis prevention. Lona has a passion for improving the way laboratorians do things and strongly believes that collaboration among laboratorians and others, results in multiplying our geniuses, and make visible the impact laboratorians have on patient outcomes.Small received her Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science from Howard University and her Health Care MBA from George Washington University. She has certifications from Villanova University, The Armstrong Institute and George Washington University, in Lean Project Management, Business Process management, Return on Investment, Lean Six Sigma, Human factors Engineering, Comprehensive Unit Based Safety Program and HealthCare Quality, among others.
